Last week, 12/2007, My Optiplex 270 would not power up. Being a repair man I took off the cover. I made sure all looked well, swapped out a power supply, memory, battery, video card and some other stuff. Nothing doing. I surfed the net and learned Dell used counterfeit or inferior capacitors that leaked. I looked at my mobo and sure enough orange muck leaked all over the board. I called Dell, and even though it was almost 2 years out of warranty, they sent me a brand new board next day and took the old one back, freight prepaid. They even offered to send out a tech to do the swap.
The GX270s are really bad. It was a small percentage that did not have problems. They all had bad caps in the motherboard. Most of the ones that were bad will get a power surge to the board and pop all the caps on the VRM component and make you have to replace the board.
You should open your GX270 and look at the 1 cap beside the AGP slot, and the 4 that look the same around the memory slots and try to see if any are bulging or have orange stuff leaking. If they have an X etching on top, they will eventually bulge and work for a long time before they start causing problems.
Dell is warranty replacing defective parts only for the
beginning of 2008 then you are on your own.
They tend to start powering off randomly and after a while won't power up at all. What is so sad is it took a major class action lawsuit against Dell to get them to do the right thing and fix a product they knew was defective.
Many people didn't know that they were entitled to a new motherboard and junked their systems when they died or paid hundreds to het them fixed. Those defective caps other brands of motherboards also and also in some video cards have the defective capacitors.
Call dell NOW and get a new board.
