Madonna of the `80s

Date of Review: Jun 13, 2000

Back in the `80's I was a Madonna wanna be. I wore the excessive jelly bracelets, mismatched earrings, dark black rimmed sun glasses and net like layered shirts, among other Madonna inspired looks. When Desperately Seeking Susan came out I "Had" to see it, despite my mothers grimaces. In fact once it came to our local theater I went with my best-friend to see it at least once a week, sometimes twice in one day.

Here's the gist of the story: Roberta is a housewife who is bored with her life. She lives vicariously through the life of Susan, a free spirit, who swaps personal adds in the paper with her boyfriend. She reads an add from the boyfriend asking Susan to meet him, Roberta can't pass up the chance to see Susan in person. So, she goes to the peer where they are suppose to meet. And then follows Susan afterwards to see where she goes. Susan ends up in a second hand store looking to buy a pair of boots, since she has no money she offers her jacket as a trade. Roberta quickly buys the jacket to have a little piece of Susan's life. Little does Susan know that the earring she finds in the jacket pocket (matching one that Susan is wearing) is a priceless antique that had been stolen from the Mob, Susan's unaware of this also.
Roberta writes a personal add for Susan telling her that she has something she might want back and to meet her at the peer. Through an odd series of events Roberta ends up getting knocked on the head ending up temporarily unconscious and losses her memory. A friend of Susan's boyfriend finds her and mistakes her for Susan. She ends up living the life of Susan for a short time and finds the life of adventure and love that she had always wanted.

OK, so this movie is a bit hoaky, after all it was made in the `80's. If you can overlook the colorful `80 fashions, hairstyles and language this is really a cute movie. I enjoyed then and now that I've watched it again recently, I have found that I still enjoy it.
