Author's Review
I liked my last truck, a 2000 GMC Sierra Ext Cab 4x4, but I REALLY like this truck! When my GMC got messed up in a bad wreck, I started looking for a new one. It came down to another GMC, and the Ram, as I just don't care for Fords at all. The hemi had just become available, and I test drove both trucks, and liked it better in almost every way. I would have bought another Sierra (I don't like the Chevy Silvverado front end at all) if the dealer had treated me the way he did. I walked, right over to the Dodge dealer.
The GMC rode slightly better, but I loved the power of the hemi. With 17" wheels, it has power from takeoff to insane speeds, and it gets there in a hurry. My truck runs, bone stock, 15.70's at the track, not bad at all. If the transmission co-operated a bit more (It has, like almost all trucks and cars now, "Torque Managment", that really keeps it from launching the way it should) it would be a couple tenths quicker in the quarter.
Equipped with 20's, it's a lot slower to 30 or so, you pay the price for those heavy wheels and tires. I didn't like the looks of them anyway, so I picked the 17" "Off-Road" package that comes with (IMO), the only really good looking stock wheels available on a 2002 and up Ram, period.
The Ram is more "truckish" than the GMC, and F150, it rides a little rougher, and is a little less refined in total. That's a plus in my book, but some people will like the others better. It's not as quiet as the GM or Ford trucks, but it's not bad. I added a couple of pieces of sound deadener in all four doors when I replaced the factory stereo and speakers. In the GMC, the stock stereo was the main cause of how bad the stereo sounded. The ram sounded a lot better stock than the GMC did, but new speakers were a huge improvement.
Unless you are a giant, expect to be buying some kind of steps for it, but this goes for almost all 4x4s anyway.
Seats are very comfortable, the lumbar support is great, once you play with it a little and figure it out.
To be honest, I liked the looks of the previous generation Rams 1994-2001 better than the 2002+ ones, but it's not bad looking, just a little overdone. It's impressive more than pretty.
Problems have been minor, warped brakes, a stuck tailgate, and a minor stalling problem. All were fixed the first try by the dealer.
The real big negatives to this truck are gas milage, and it's size in general.
