Kill your TV and tell the cable company to take a hike

Prior to EyeTV:
- No cable
- DSL from Verizon ($35 per month + phone)
- Ability to view 5 to 7 analog broadcast channels with $25 radio shack antenna.

Problem:
- 20" TV and 17" CRT computer monitor in the middle of our small apartment

Solution:
- One shiny new 24" iMac ($2k - Intel Dual Core, 250G)
- One EyeTV Hybrid

What we gained:
- Two big honking displays out of our lives
- Digital versions of all the old analog channels, plus about 10 channels we didn't have on the old analog TV
- A program guide (just like our friends with cable, but without the monthly fees)
- A DVR

Final impressions:

For our situation, the EyeTV Hybrid is a USB key sized ray of light parting through clouds. It was a breeze to install . I fought with the Mac remote a bit in order to figure out how to use the main menu, but once we figured out you just hold the "menu" button down for a couple of seconds to launch the menu (program guide, configurations, and DVR) we were in good shape.

Your input type is critical, although I don't fiddle with the antenna at all anymore.

You may want to think twice about this if you are not comfortable navigating your computing and fighting with various settings in order to get everything set to your liking.
