Pros:
Can't go wrong for the price, easy to use, solid no-flicker image, portable
Cons:
fan is a little noisy at maximum brightness. Less than HDTV resolution. Contrast is so-so.
The Bottom Line:
I'd buy this again.

Author's Review
I received this as a gift and I am very happy with it.
It's bright and has good color. It's LCD, so you don't
get any of the that weird rainbow flicker you sometimes
see with DLP projectors. The downside is that the
contrast is not as good, but at night the image is
plenty good enough. I have quite a bit of ambient
light in my "theater" room even with the lights off, but
the image still plenty bright.
The native resolution is 800x600, but it will accept
1024x768 or higher resolution input from a computer.
The S4 seamlessly downsamples the signal to 800x600.
This means I just plug it into my computer and use it
without having to adjust my computer's screen resolution
down to 800x600. The S4 does a good job of downsampling, so
I can still read most small fonts. 800x600 is higher than
standard NTSC TV, so regular cable and DVDs look great.
It's not HDTV, but it's still better than NTSC.
The projector is very light and portable. It comes
with a padded tote bag. It's very easy to move and setup.
It has a remote control with a joystick that
doubles as a remote mouse. Mouse control isn't very
precise, but it's good enough to browse around through
folders and start videos.
I get about a 9 foot image projected about 10 feet
from my viewing wall. This projector has limited keystone
correction. For best results, you should mount the
projector at about eye-level and perpendicular to the wall.
Originally I planned to mount it pretty high above my
head, but this didn't work as well.
The fan is a little noisy at full brightness.
This isn't a big deal, but without movies a silent
system is always better. Once the movie starts
I hardly notice the fan. If the room is very dark
then I can put the projector into low brightness mode
and the fan slows down quiet a bit and is almost silent.
Before I received the Epson S4 I was considering the
BenQ W100 and InFocus X1. I probably would have been
happy with any of these.
