Run, Stewie, RUN!!
Date of Review: Aug 10, 2005
The Bottom Line: A good ride for fans of Family Guy, though dire fans will have to get this one.
Plot
This is like watching a 90-minute episode of Family Guy, a cartoon about a simple family in Rhode Island that somehow go on wacky and crazy adventures. This is actually three separate episodes that are blended together into one, as one correctly transitions into the other. All three episodes are about Stewie (the baby of the family, who's technological genius is only overshadowed by his lust for power). Since this is a DVD they can get away with more than on regular TV. There's no nudity (aww!) well no more nudity than the show normally has, but there is swearing (yay!).
The content of the movie is naturally offensive, even more offensive than the regular Family Guy TV shows. It's crazy, silly, and sometimes random just like the TV shows. At times there will be very short flashbacks to bizarre situations that have nothing to do with the current storyline, however that is something that they do in every episode.
It's the summer time and Stewie is forced to take swimming lessons. He's deeply envious of a high-performing child and tries to kill him by blowing up the base of the lifeguard tower. Unfortunately, the trap backfires and the tower lands right on him, sending him to the terrible pits of Hell?. And that's the end of the movie....
I'm just kidding! It'd be a pretty sorry movie if it ended there.
Anyway, Stewie gets a glimpse of the bad place and wakes up. Seeing how such a horrible fate is bestowed upon him, he vows to change his ways and does everything he can to be nice to others. He even takes an errie and unnatural affection to Brian (the family dog who can somehow stand on two feet, talk, and mix a martini), sort of like the creepy guy that wants to be your best friend and won't go away. Realizing that he can't keep this up for long, Stewie decided to take up drinking to make him happy more often.
After a long romp in alcoholism, Stewie sees a news report taking place in San Francisco and sees someone who looks very similar to him. So he, Brian and, Quagmire (Family friend, or just an annoying guy, who's life purpose is to have as much sex as possible) set off to the rainbow city in search of what Stewie believes may be his real father.
The rest of the movie involves road trips, time travel, sex-change operations and the visage of a man I never want to be. I really cannot go into much detail, as it would reveal too many things about the plot.
Acting, Sound & Music
The animation does not differ at all from the regular TV shows. As usual I see no flaws in the animation or voice acting. The only flaws I see are moral flaws, however I love offensive movies like this. The sounds and music are the standard variety for the Family Guy TV show. There is a part toward the end where they recreate a very well-done parody of the last fifteen minutes of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", complete with the same music played. (the part where he's running home to beat his parents to the door).
Overall
If you like the Family Guy TV series, then you'll like this. If you don't like the Family Guy TV series, and are bored out of your mind when watching the 30-minute show, you're going to really be in pain during this one. I must admit that I am a fan of Family Guy, but I'm not going to let that get in the way of an honest and open review. The movie is good, but it doesn't really do anything to stand out beyond the original TV series. Then again that's not such a bad thing, since the series is excellent.
