Author's Review
We recently upgraded to the Fellowes DS-1 Shredder after I moved in with my fiancee. He is one who never throws things out. And I throw everything out, and that made him nervous. So now he shreds all the junk mail and anything else we dont need.
I really like it a lot. It is fairly compact and fits in the corner of a room, out of my four year olds view. It is pretty nice looking. It comes in silver and black, so it blends in anywhere. It is 22 inches high and 15 and a half inches wide. It weighs about 23 pounds empty.
The Fellowes DS-1 Shredder comes with a 9 inch top paper inserter and an almost 5 gallon mesh bin to collect the shredded documents. It has a simple, silver automatic on/off button and if you press the same button backwards, thats the reverse function.
My favorite function of the Fellowes DS-1 Shredder is that it has Safe Sense technology. That means it automatically stops immediately once it senses that the paper entry is touched. That saves little fingers from certain disaster.
I love the mesh storage bin because I always now when its time to empty it. And emptying the Fellowes DS-1 Shredder is a breeze. Its like one of those garbage pails you step on the stop on the bottom and it opens. Well, this, you just step on the bottom and it tilts outward and you just pick it up and put it in the paper recycling bin. There is a magnetic safety interlock that stops the system from working once the bin is removed.
It can shred up to 11 sheets of paper at a time and you can shred that much between 10 and 20 times a day, bringing that to a whopping total of about 220 sheets.
And here is an amazing thing about the Fellowes DS-1 Shredder. It can shred credit cards, paper clips, and even staples!
There is only one thing that I really wasn't too fond of is that the cord is short. But, it really doesn't matter since you just plug it in and really shouldn't need to move it around too much.
The reverse function is a wonderful little feature, because I dont have much time, working full time and taking care of a four year old, so I tend to push the machine a bit and in turn, get jams. So, I just press the reverse button a couple times so that the paper goes in and out, and then finally passes completely through. No having to take the Fellowes DS-1 Shredder apart or having to wait for my fiancee to come home and do it because Im afraid of things like that.
I am glad we got it. It gets a lot of use in our household. You can find it here http://www.buyonlinenow.com/viewproduct.asp?sku=FEL3011001 for $117.
