Product Review

The characterization of gender relations

by   mekeel ,   Jan 23, 2007

Pros:  The attention to detail regarding traditions, and the descriptive clarity.

Cons:  Welch's take on the status of women.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

This is a wonderful novel. I learned a great deal about the traditions, religion, and day to day existence of the Pikunis. The characters are boldly painted and ride through my thoughts long after I put the book down. While telling the story through the eyes of the Native Americans, Welch does a good job maintaining objectivity. I must agree with the knock on Welch's characterization of gender relations. While no expert on Native American culture, I believe Welch used some license in portraying marriage in a more European light. The women in this story, if not equal in status, are treated in a somewhat egalitarian fashion. I'm not convinced this was the case.
