A Van That Is Truly A Van
Date of Review: Oct 12, 1999
Being part of a family of 5 with 2 children participating in various sports, we found that it was time to trade in the 1996 Nissan Sentra for the infamous minivan. We decided to purchase the 1998 Ford Windstar GL because of it's 5-star safety rating. Although the Windstar served it's purpose well, I must say that it was a van that truly felt like a van. Having had the opportunity to drive a 1998 Dodge Caravan for three months, the difference in the feel between the two is extreme.
The Dodge Caravan is built on a car chassis and the Windstar is built on a truck chassis which makes the HUGE difference. When driving the Windstar you had the feeling of driving a bus. Getting from zero to 60 mph in the Windstar sounded and felt like a bus straining to achieve the desired speed. However, doing this in the Caravan felt like you were driving a compact, sleek sedan with "a kick." Don't get me wrong, both minivans are extremely good looking, the interiors are very roomy, both have adjustable/removeable rear bench seats, etc. etc. I do have to point out that the Windstar has more rear storage room than the Caravan which makes for easy transport of sports equipment, groceries, pets, etc.
If safety is key for you, definitely purchase the Windstar. It has been awarded the 5-star award for at least three years in a row. However, if the feel of how it drives is more important, stay away from the Windstar and take a look at the Caravan.
