Product Review

Bad for my eyes

by   markshark ,   Oct 17, 2002

Pros:  Very inexpensive, lots of basic PDA and ebook features, MP3 player, voice recorder.

Cons:  Screen glare is terrible, backlight is almost useless

The Bottom Line:  I would only recommend this unit if you can try it out and return it if dissatisfied with the screen quality; otherwise, look for something with better readability.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I picked this up at Costco for $49.95. I've been thinking about whether I would really use a PDA if I had one, and thought this was a low-cost way to find out. As a result, I found the features of this unit useful and intriguing enough that I'm going to shop seriously for a more full-featured PDA.

Unfortunately, I found the screen glare so bad on this unit that it's practically worthless for long-term use, like reading an ebook. My eyes start to hurt within minutes of reading the screen, so it's really only good for notes, addresses and other quick tasks, at least for me. Other people seem to be able to read it fine, so if you're one of them, this could be a real bargain.

The backlight is weak, ghosty and totally worthless in anything other than nearly complete darkness. It might make a semi-decent MP3 player if you can get a 64MB MMC card cheaply enough.
