Finest space game ever!

by   bestyear ,   Apr 25, 2000

Pros:  Lots of control over your ship and weapons

Cons:  You'll never command a large ship or a fleet

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I started playing the demo version of this game and
got hooked on it. I couldn't stop playing. I'd play
hours and hours. Until I reached the end of the demo
that is. Then I'd start over.

Finally I bought a full version of this great game at
the store. Now I really would play it all night long.

The game recommends that you use a joystick to play
this game. But I haven't had any luck finding one to
work with my p.c. yet.
So I play it with the keyborad keys. It works for me.

First you will create your pilot. Then you move on to
a briefing of your mission. At first you'll be trained
some basic controls and features of your ship. How to
speed-up and slow-down, firing weapons and dogfighting.

When first beginning the game with a new pilot you won't
have much of a selection of ships or weapons. But as you
complete each mission you'll have better selections to
choose from. The ships and weapons will get better and
better the further you go.
Each mission begins with the mission briefing.
In this briefing you are given your mission objectives
and the number of friendly ships that will be involved.
After you have been on a few missions and distinguished
yourself you will be given more responsibilities in each
mission. Like ordering your wingmen to attack or avoid a
target.
There are some cool ships to choose from and cool weapon
loadouts to use. On some missions you'll fly a fighter and
others a bomber.

You have a lot of control over your ship. It's critical
to learn how to manage your weapons, engines and shield
controls.
The best source is your "Flight Manual".
Read it and know it.

After playing the first mission or two you may want to customize
the display and sound options. They are easy to use and change.
The HUD (Heads Up Display) is something that you'll want to
customize.

The HUD is the main screen of the game. It contains all of your
messages, communications, directives and objectives, target
information, shield, radar, power display, weapon , engine,
damage, collision warnings and afterburner information.
Targets can be automatically highlighted. Your speed can also be
set to automatically change to match your target's.
When you are low on weapons or need some system repair you can
call for a support ship to rearm and repair systems damage.

Multiplayer is available. But I've never played it that way.

Even if you don't have a joystick you will have fun playing this
game with your keyborad.
