This GE dishwasher was an extremely good buy. I bought it as a scratch and dent model at my local appliance store for 399.99. It had a dented front plastic panel which cost me an extra 69.99 to replace. My boyfriend, who is no Bob Villa, replaced the front panel in 30 minutes total. In any event, the dishwasher itself is extremely well built. The first thing that struck me when I opened the dishwasher to load it with my first load is the quality of engineering. You can tell that GE didn't put the cheap parts in this dishwasher. The upper rack holds those huge glasses that we all have in our cupboard. The lower rack holds the big cookie sheets with no problem. I find that I can load the GE up to almost capacity with dirty glasses and plates and it makes no difference in the quality of cleanliness of the dishes when they come out. I have never once in a month of hard core use had to rewash a dish. You must use cascade liquid however. I noticed a wierd film when I was using a cheaper dishwasher detergent. When we loaded it up for the first time and I turned it on, you honestly could not tell it was on without pressing your ear to the front panel. That is how quiet it is. It is also extremely energy efficient. I love this dishwasher!! I would recommend it even at the full price to anyone!

Update: 09/04/2002: My dishwasher began to leak water out of the lower left seal over the Labor Day weekend. I am not sure what happened-- I just walked in to the kitchen and floor was covered in water. It is definitely a seal problem as it leaks now from the time it begins washing to the rinse cycle. The GE Man is coming this weekend. I will update at that time to let everyone know what happened. I am taking 1 point off the reliability rating as a result of this incident. I still recommend the dishwasher, though. Thanks!

Update 09/07/2002: The reliable GE man came today just as promised. The problem ended up being a loose screw on the outside of the soap dispenser. I am not sure how this caused the leak of water out of the lower left hand side, but it took the GE man 20 minutes to fix and test and he was out. I must say that this experience has showed me that GE will stand by their products no matter what. The GE man was pleasant and extremely knowledgeable and the people on the 1-800 number were the same. Instead of deterring me from buying GE, I am considering replacing my washer and dryer with GE because of this experience with their technical personnel. Thanks!
