Author's Review
The Afghan Whigs have, unfortunately, broken up. But their work stands the test of time, and none more so than "Gentlemen".
This is one of those rare albums where every song is brilliant. It is a concept album of sorts, telling the story of the destruction (implosion might be a better term) of a love affair. What is particularly impressive is that they tell this story with none of the sappiness or cliches that typically infest "relationship" songs. Greg Dulli sings with complete conviction, and his utter objectivity to the oncoming collapse comes in stark contrast to his inability (or conscious decision not to) to try and stop it.
Going beyond the lyrics, the music is a powerful blend of R&B and what was then called "alternative": powerful guitars with occasional crackling feedback, vibrant bass work, incredible percussion, and rousing piano. Each member of the band is totally on target, and result is sheer perfection, song after song.
In summary, I can only say that if you enjoy rock music at all, and prefer your bands to have intelligence and lyrical meaning as well as instrument mastery, you should listen to Gentlemen. And I mean listen...put it on, sit down, and listen to the entire thing from beginning to end. Then again, with the lyrics out in front of you. I predict that this CD will not leave your changer for quite some time.
