cuaron fixes what wasn't broke
Date of Review: Jun 27, 2004
in which egomaniac european director, mucho adored by the critics, (is there any - just ONE - european director the critics don't fawn over? i didn't think so),decides to take near-perfect source material and the near-perfect work of the previous director and toss it out in order to put "hees own stamp" on it. so hogwarts, and the wizard world so painstakingly and faithfully created by chris columbus gets trashed. the school shrinks; moves; sprouts a clock tower; becomes a sinister place. the adult actors pretty much disappear. the kids dress and behave like right little slobs. the movie chops the book; adds scenes; deletes critically important scenes; and pretty much stinks up the place. god help you if you haven't read the book first...you'll be lost.
