Product Review

HBR - One big consulting sales pitch

by   jkatrader ,   Apr 12, 2002

Pros:  1. On par with WSJ for reputation in Business

Cons:  1. Doesn't deserve the reputation

The Bottom Line:  12 times per year for the price of 12 business books or a subscription to the weekly Economist. HBR does not deliver the ROI.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I have dutifully shelled out the $100+ for annual subscription to Harvard Business Review. After 8 months of this magazine, I have yet to find more than a couple decent articles. What charades as "academic business writing for the senior executive" is mostly consulting sales pitch. A typical article starts out with a model or issue, and then, low and behold, the author begins a 4-page elaboration on how his firm or practice or whatever solved this particular issue for a client. The only decent articles are reprints from Peter Drucker and the like, back when the magazine was perhaps providing real-value to the hapless exec.

Perhaps it's the current Editor, perhaps it's what a Business magazine inevitably becomes - a tradeshow booth for business consultants hawking their services. Whatever the root, I recommend staying with the WSJ or Economist if you want real business insight and value. You can have these HBR consultants pitch you for free during business hours - why pay for it. And yes, I am not renewing this subscription.
