Weve been using Compaq/HP PCs at my office for years, as we were able to make an arrangement through HP to buy 300 PCs every 3 years at a cost of well under $1000, including monitors. This model, the CD5750, is our current office model. I received mine during the late summer.
It is equipped as follows:
Memory 2G
Virtual memory 2G
Processor: AMD x86 15 Family model 95
Operating system: Windows XP
DVD/ROM drive
Hard drive 80G
Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio
The hard drive is modest, because we use network drives to hold data and we have automatic backup configured.
We are running Microsoft Office Suite as our standard applications, including Word, Excel and Access. We do not use Outlook, as our IT director thinks it vulnerable to attack and security issues. Instead, we use Novell Groupwise for email. I also use a web-based banking system daily. I have access to general ledger processing and reports, ADP payroll inquiry and a few other subsystems. Our printers are networked and there have been no issues from the PC with printing to the network.
This PC has been highly reliable. I have had no issues with performance in doing the accounting work assigned to me. I have had no hardware-induced crashes and no software conflicts. This configuration works great with the applications that I need to get my job done. O
The IT scheme of my employer, which is to have homogenized equipment that is easy to network and administer, is an excellent one. The IT department purposely limits the available configurations so they can be more easily installed, configured and supported. We have highly reliable hardware and very good technology support here. Our help desk really helps.
The computer speakers are not all that great, but I can't listen to them at work, anyway, because I am in an open cubicle. I listen to music using headphones during the day when I want.
Obviously, the package that it is configured will not support heavy duty gaming or multimedia. Its still a good, basic PC for under $1,000 according to the Epinions pricing data.
