Product Review

What a great computer monitor!

by   kjri ,   Mar 28, 2009

Pros:  Brilliant, clear, bright, beautiful to look at and big

Cons:  Somewhat unstable with a rotating disk and unremovable advertising on the bottom of the stand.

The Bottom Line:  Excellent, beautiful, functional, and wonderful!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I'm going to date myself here. I've been using computers since they had little one line displays with less than a sentence's worth of characters. I went through the green text era followed by amber text, which was a big improvement - easier on the eyes. I used 5" screens for word processing on some of the first so-called personal computers. Anyone remember the Osborne? LOL

My last computer system was 5 years old and though working well, needed to be replaced. I started looking for a bundle around Christmas, but thought I'd best wait until President's Day, which is when the really good deals come out. And then there it was. Best Buy. An HP slimline with a 22" monitor and a printer, all on sale for a really good price. In the store, this monitor looked better than anything else I'd seen, so I went for it.

I have never been happier with a computer monitor! The clarity of the image, the color, the brightness and resolution are unsurpassed. Nearly high-definition. Web videos look great, even full screen. Images are stunning with realistic color and light. It refreshes rapidly. Even these old eyes don't get eyestrain with it, even with hours of use.

At first I didn't like the speakers included on the back of the monitor. I couldn't get the volume I wanted, until I found the software control. Now that I have, the speakers are no longer an issue.

Setup was easy except for one thing. The monitor was packed flat. The visual guide to opening it was useless, in my opinion. But I eventualy figured out to just pull the thing up, rotate it 90 degrees and voila, it was ready to plug in.

One cable connects the monitor to the computer. A USB cable connects to the computer and makes it possible to connect a device to the two USB ports on the side of the monitor. It also came with an HDMI cable for TV viewing, though my new cpu didn't come with a card that supports HDMI.

Speaking of rotating, if you don't like scrolling, you can rotate this thing into portrait mode. For me, I prefer the horizontal landscape mode so I can see multiple applications side by side. Either way, it is simply fabulous.

There are only two things I really don't like. The base contains a label that advertises some HP decorations. I can't remove the label so I guess I'm stuck with that advertisement for the life of the monitor. Tacky. The base also has a round disk on the bottom that makes it easy to turn the whole monitor, which is good if you want to share with someone else in the room, but also makes it too easy to knock the screen out of position.
