Author's Review
Being a Michael Jackson fan, I have been anticipating this album for a long time. It is a confident, upbeat album on which the King of Pop largely returns to his soul/R&B roots.
Fans will not be disappointed to find that Jackson revisits familiar territory on Invincible, including criticism of the press ("Privacy"), changing the world ("Cry"), the plight of many youths ("The Lost Children"), and the supernatural ("Threatened").
It is no secret that Invincible is geared more toward the younger generation. With appearances by Biggie Smalls, Babyface, Brandy, and even Santana, it should have no problem with its appeal. Jackson even tries some new vocal tactics (hearing him yell "What!" in "2000 Watts" is kind of neat). But, the admirable thing is that he manages to try new things without selling out his signature styles; that is the charm.
So, I am pleased to tell you that the year 2001 does indeed find Michael Jackson, the boy-wonder-turned-pop-superstar, Invincible! Still a naysayer? Invincible is the #1 album in the U.S. as I write this review. :)
