Author's Review
This camera is an excellent choice for entry-level professionals or very serious hobbyists. I have used my JVC-GY-DV300 along with my JVC-GY-DV500 to produce a short film and make several video productions. No one can tell when I switch between cameras when they look at the final production. The picture quality is on par with that of the Sony Betacam, maybe considered better if you like sharper detail in the image.
I get many comments about the picture quality, it really does produce a sharp, high quality image.
This camera has pro features like XLR audio jacks, full manual control, gamma adjustments, audio level adjustments, etc. I do find that I have to pay attention to the exposure level, it runs a bit hot, so I typically set the exposure compensation to -2 or -3.
It has a cine-gamma switch that will produce a more film-like look, particularly in bright sunlight.
It has easy, intuitive, uncomplicated controls. It is great for "run and gun" shooting as well as precise, controlled studio-type environments where you tweak and optimize all the available adjustments.
I wish the camera looked a little more like a "pro" camera and less like a high level consumer camera, because the guts are all "pro."
Audio control is good, but when set on "auto" it takes a long time to re-set after exposure to a loud noise, like a car door slamming.
