Product Review

Not up to International standards

by   jhgreenstein ,   Dec 12, 2002

Pros:  Lots of local news

Cons:  reads like a school newspaper. Poor English, very right wing

The Bottom Line:  Ok for local news if you can ignore the strong right wing bias. Not considered a serious paper by the foreign press. Only read it at my in-laws!

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

When I arrived in Israel in 1983, the Jerusalem Post was the only English language daily newspaper. I used to enjoy reading it and it's (then) left histadrut leanings didn't bother me.
There were so many good writers then such as Pinchas Peli, Alex Berlyne, Brad Burston, Walter Frankel and so many others.
Over the years many have died off and others were pushed or resigned after the virulent right wing take over by the new owners and publisher.

I remember in June seeing an advert that recommended the killing of arabs as a response to Palestinian violence. The editor apparently rejected the advert, but was overuled by the owners or publishers.

Nowadays the paper is little more than a mouthpiece for the settler movement and worse, the quality of writing is on the whole, poor. The letters page is usually amusing as they print such silly letters that no respectable paper would ever consider. The 'In Jerusalem' and magazine supplements are usually interesting however.
