Four of 4 were defective
Date of Review: Nov 5, 2007
The Bottom Line: Avoid this product. The manufacturer is known for photographs and this appears to be Kodaks first entry into the small business machine category. Too many glitches.
I would like to praise this product as the last one I purchased did a great job as far as printing photographs is concerned; however, the first three that I purchased had to be taken back because of defective print heads (it seems that none of the retailers had replacement print heads). The picture printing quality is phenomenal.
Instructions are difficult to find (go to Kodak's site and download the manual as one does not come with the product)and vague. You also need to download a firmware upgrade for the printer to function properly, but you most likely will not know this until you call support. I am using windows XP and I strongly recommend the creation of a restore point prior to installing. Also, there is no way to completely uninstall the software. After uninstalling there is still a huge Kodak folder left in the Program Files (I simply deleted it). The machine is bulky.
Support is farmed out and all of the technicians I spoke with had little to none "hands-on" knowledge of the machine. My last Kodak EASYSHARE 5500 AiO had a defect in scanning. When using the Automatic Document Feeder only the last page would have its image copied. You could watch all the other pages come up blank in preview area and last page would have a great captured image. The suggestion at support was that I only scan one page at a time. I told support that I spent the extra $100 for the ADF so that I could scan multiple pages. I was told my unit was defective and to return it to the retailer.
Ink is supplied by two separate containers. One is black and the other contains five colors. When one of the five colors runs out (think Christmas red), the entire color canister has to be replaced. HP offers six different color containers that can be replaced as each runs out. The viewing LCD is very nice. Once you have chosen an image it will crispen into detail where you can zoom and crop as you wish. Printing 4x6 photographs requires that you slide the photo tray into the machine (other manufacturer's printers do this automatically).
