Has muscle, but no smarts

Date of Review: Jul 15, 2008

The Bottom Line:  Only buy this product if you are planning to sell your home soon or don't care how much your electric bill is
This product does a great job of cooling, but is a power hog. When in the "Energy Saver Mode", it runs every three minutes to determine the air temperature. That's about 75,000 on/off cycles in a season, for sensing alone. If during this cycle, the air is detected to be too warm, the unit shuts off the fan and then turns everything back on. We tried to use the timer to limit the amount of time the air conditioner runs. However, when the unit turns on from the timer, it resets all the settings to their default values (except the temp setting). One of those defaults is for the Energy Saver mode to be disabled. Please note that this is an electric heat and cool system, NOT a Heat Pump and cool system. Not only does that make it very inefficient in the heat mode, but the fan also runs constantly in that mode. One advantage is that we were able to install this unit thru-the-wall, though not recommended by the manufacturer. It will void the warranty, but I was able to install it without any limitations to original product design. I would only recommend buying this unit if you are going to sell your house soon or don't care how much electricity you use. I tried to contact LG engineers but only received the message that that is the way it is made .
