The sporty new GS 300, with its low, sleek lines and very hi-tech systems, is Japanese artistry and craftsmanship on wheels. While significantly smaller than the LS400, it's just right for city driving and cramped car parks. Keyless entry is taken to new heights with the 'puddle lamps' and soft interior lights coming on as you approach the car. Acceleration is even better than the BMW - it's fun leaving the rest sitting at traffic lights! Steering is just right - not as hard as the BMW, not as soft as the LS400. Suspension is tight, with good road feel and very firm cornering (BMW's speciality).
The Mark Levinson is an audio experience on steroids - it takes the drudgery out of long drives or heavy traffic. BMW and Merc aren't even in the same class, unless they're offering Bose systems (now that could be another experience altogether!).
Every movable fitting is hydraulically damped - that's the kind of attention to detail that makes Lexus a best-selling luxury brand. The touch-screen console is placed just right and is very easy to use - no need to read the manual. The 6CD changer makes it a breeze to switch them whenever you want.
The rear-view camera with in-console display is neat for parking, as is the proximity warning system. The boot both opens and closes keylessly (and gently) and is quite spacious.
This one even has rear passenger side airbags in addition to dual front airbags and curtains.
The good news is that Lexus has finally improved its exterior design - particularly in the IS and GS - to match its other superb design features. The car's a real head turner!
Pros:
Zippy, super quiet, firm handling, Mark Levinson, welcoming lights on keyless entry, proximity warning/rear camera, sexy looks, hydraulically damped moving parts, auto light/rain sensors, nicely placed cup holders, tuck-away controls for infrequently used settings, auto-detect Bluetooth phone system, spacious storage at driver's elbow, hinged in-door storage pockets
