Product Review

Up & Running

by   steeler-2003 ,   Nov 7, 2003

Pros:  Security, looks, easy to get up and running

Cons:  Interference from other 2.4 Ghz devices

The Bottom Line:  Even though I've had some issues I'd recommend this router since it's not clear if the issues are my computer or the router.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

I bought this router while I was waiting for my new laptop to arrive. It was a breeze to set up once I finally got the pdf file to open. For some reason the filename didn't include a ".pdf" so it wasn't found on its own and I had to explore the CD drive to manually open it myself. That was a little annoying considering it's such an easy error to fix.

Once I got that done the instructions are great. I was up and running a wireless network in just a few minutes. Since then I have had some problems using it. I now want to enable WEP security but it doesn't work. I've followed the instructions to the letter multiple time over and no luck. The problem either lies with the router or XPP (the laptop's OS) or the laptop hardware (integrated wireless).

The main reason I went with Linksys is because everyone kept on recommending them. A buddy who is a network security guru recommends them as well. The built in firewall feature is nice to have too in that regard.

There also seems to be a lot of customization available for the computer geeks that lend it a lot of versatility. I haven't tried them out nor will I probably in the future. I have no need for them.

It allows 4 hardware connected computers and 1 wireless. More than enough for my needs at home. I have used the wireless from basement to 2nd floor and still receive and "excellent" signal strength.

The most annoying thing is that my 2.4 GHz wireless phone can knock me right off-line when it's being used at the same time.
