Mermaid drowns in the sea
Date of Review: Oct 7, 2000
The Little Mermaid 2 is nothing compared to the first one. I was dissapointed to see a decrease in graphics quality and music. As usual, Walt Disney is known to give incredible performance when it comes to music in their animated movies. There is this synchronism in the music and all the graphics displayed. However, the Little Mermaid 2 slightly show this synchronism but not as amazing as its prequel. There were less details displayed and less excitement as this combination of story with music goes on. Perhaps the storyline is the only element that stays acceptable. The movie is rather short.
In my opinion, you should forget this movie if you expect to see the same quality as Mermaid 1. Remember, this little movie only appears on Videocassette or DVD, so the authors did not put as much effort and time on this than a movie that will hit the big screens on your local movie theater. This movie is still useful is you have a young son or daughter who wishes to know what happens in the sequel. After all, I guess that's why there was a sequel.. to attract the curiosity of little children :)
I was also trying to find out the moral of this story. Does this teach/encourage children to actually leave home and find their path on their own? That mothers/fathers are not understandable? Trust other people rather than your own beloved family? I find rather strange that this movie does not incorporate values that will strictly improve the moral/judgement/ethics of a child (remember, this movie was supposed to be more intended for a young audience).
Globally, this movie still stands on its end, but it is not a masterpiece like most of Walt Disney's animated cartoons. Sometimes, I rather think that only the first one exists as the second one seems to ruin the first.
