Product Review

Going Cordless at the Office with my Logitech Cordless Mouse

by   dlstewart , lead in Home and Garden at Epinions.com ,   Dec 16, 2005

Pros:  for left or right hand, cordless, easy to install and use

Cons:  not optical; has a mouseball

The Bottom Line:  I am sooooo happy to have a cordless mouse. What freedom!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

The computer on my desk at work is situated in an awkward position. A corded mouse did not offer enough leeway in the cord for comfortable use of the mouse. So I requested a cordless mouse. That’s how I came to use the Logitech Cordless Mouse (Model # 931025-0403).

What’s in the Box?

The box contains:

Logitech Cordless Mouse
Cordless Receiver
CD with MouseWare software
Installation Guide (English, Spanish, French, Portugese)
USB with PS/2 Adapter
Two AAA Batteries

The box information is written in English, Spanish and French.

Description

The mouse essentially has three working parts. The mouse, the receiver, and the software.

This two-button mouse measures 5" long x 2 1/2" wide. It stands 1 1/2" tall. The colors of it are a pale gray and silver. The mouse also has a center button wheel. Do not confuse this mouse with an optical mouse. This Logitech mouse uses a mouseball.

The receiver is triangular in shape and has a USB cord with an optional PS/2 adapter (color green). At its widest points, the receiver measures 3 1/4" x 3".

A CD also comes in the package. The software that comes on the CD is:

MouseWare 9.76 (for Windows 98, XP, ME, 2000, NT 4.0 SPG)
MouseWare 9.73.1 (for Windows 95)
MouseWare M 4.0.6 (for Mac OS 8.6 - 9.2)
Logitech Control Center 1.1 (for Mac OS X v10.1.2 - 10.2.4)

Installation

Installing this mouse was a breeze. I had it up and running in a matter of minutes.

First insert the two AAA batteries into the bottom of the mouse. With the computer turned off, insert the receiver plug into the back of the computer. This plug can fit into a USB slot or a PS/2 port. According to the instructions, the receiver needs to be placed 8" (or more) away from electrical devices such as the keyboard, mouse, computer tower, monitor, speakers, or external drives. My receiver is placed 48" away from the mouse due to the awkward setup of my computer on the desk. The mouse works fine with the receiver that far away. The receiver has a direct line of sight to the mouse without any obstructions.

Next comes the installation of the software. Turn on the computer and insert the CD. The setup screens will prompt you during the installation. After the software is installed, the screen prompts you to restart the computer. Once the computer is restarted, the computer senses the new cordless mouse and runs a setup wizard to program whether the mouse will be used at the left or right side of the keyboard, and also offers options for programming the center button wheel. The default setting for the center button wheel is a “universal scroll” of 3 lines. If you wish, you can program the mouse to scroll 6 lines or a full screen at a time. The other options for the center button wheel are: backspace, control, delete, enter, escape. Or the button can be set to autoscroll in the direction the cursor moves or for a double click.

Note: if the mouse is placed at the left of the keyboard, and you choose that option during setup ... the software will reverse the left and right button click features. The left button will activate the menu function, and the right button acts as the single click. I’m using the mouse to the left of my keyboard, but during setup I selected that the mouse would be on the right of the keyboard so that the mouse buttons would be the way I am used to using them.

Now comes the part where the receiver has to be synced with the mouse. Press the “connect” button on top of the triangular receiver. Then press the “connect” button on the bottom of the mouse. The connect button on the bottom of the mouse is recessed. I use an unbent paperclip to press it.

My Experiences

This mouse can be used in either the left or right hand. I have used it in both since I’m ambidextrous. This mouse has a long shape, and I have long fingers ... so it’s a good fit for me. I find it comfortable, and can use it for long periods of time without feeling any stress on my hand.

I like a mouse with a scroll wheel, too, so that I can zoom through the pages in a document. This wheel has great moving action. I have it programmed to scroll three lines of text at a time. When I press the wheel down (as I would a button), a round circle appears on the screen. This round circle allows me to move the mouse up and down, and the screen will automatically scroll as I move the mouse (there is no need to turn the wheel).

The mouseball easily glides across the mousepad. It works well on both a cloth textured mouepad and a smooth plastic one. The cursor glides easily across the screen without any jerky movement. The mouse buttons are easy to push, too.

As far as I can see, the only downside to this mouse is that the mouseball will need periodic cleaning. If this were an optical mouse, I wouldn’t have to worry about a mouseball.

Purchasing

Our office supply buyer bought this mouse from PC Connection for $19.95.

Summary

This Logitech Cordless Mouse is far better than the corded mouse I had. I love it. Logitech products have always proven long lasting and of good quality. I've never been disappointed by one.

I hope you have found this review useful.

Enjoy your day,
Dawn
