Why do PS2 owners need to suffer with this?

Date of Review: Jun 13, 2006

The Bottom Line:  I don't know if you have any other option for a PS2 headset. But if you can, don't get this one. And don't use it as a dedicated PC headset.
To get things started, I guess I should say what my experience is with headsets overall to give you an idea of what it is being compared to. The original SOCOM headset (it was packaged in SOCOM: US Navy SEALS) was my first. It actually lasted pretty long before the headband broke. When I was getting a new PS2 headset I really wanted the one with the mute and sound options but sadly this is the only one I could find (and it still is). So eventually the headset broke after maybe a year at the most. I won't get into the details but I'll say I opened up the mic and there was nothing I could do to fix it. So I bought another one like this and it still works but I barely play my PS2 online or use it anymore at all.

The other headsets I do use are the Logitech Internet Chat one (which is basically like the gaming behind-the-head headset with a different color and a few other discreptencies) and the original Xbox and Xbox 360 headsets. Compared to those, this PS2 mic is no competition.

First off, theres no volume change or mute button so you can't do anything to prevent others from hearing your conversation online besides taking it off your head. It can get annoying and loud sometimes when you get little kids screaming in it with no way to turn it down. I realize that some other reviews are saying that there is mute, and on some models there were, because I've seen them in stores, but I know that the ones I've had do not.

Another problem is the cord seems to get in the way since it's plugged in under the controller port, this is not really logitech's fault though. At first the mic is way to sensative though, my breathing would cause make sound, but eventually that went away. The mic does swivel pretty well so you can keep it away from your face when you need to.

I will say that the quality is, overall, pretty good though. It is quite comfortable and comes with 3 ear pieces for you to use, but theres not a huge difference in them. The over-the-head style is nice for long gaming sessions and doesn't hurt your ears after a while like the original Xbox headset. However, it does feel very flimsy and cheap. The cord looks like a cat could easily snip through it, or your baby brother for that matter, and the headset feels like it could snap if someone stepped on it, actually I know this for a fact because it happened to one of my friends.

I've tried using this headset for my PC but when I tried to use it, it would sound scratchy and inaudible. I tried uninstalling the drivers and everything I could think of, but nothing would work. Eventually I just bought myself a dedicated PC headset that works great.

All in all this is a very poor mic. It does have its pro's but, for a logitech product especially, it is very unfortunete. Logitech makes some fine peripheralls, not only for Playstation products but most everything they do. Yet this headset doesn't even offer any value for its price.

Pros
Decent quality, quite comfortable, comes with 3 ear-pieces, works with PC (but didn't for me)
Cons
Feels cheap, no volume change, no mute, it will break on you
