Good remote, Fair price

I purchased a 676 in late December. The upper right button didn't work consistently so I returned it for a second 676 which worked fine. The build quality of the 676 is excellent. You could easily drop the remote and expect it to work. It had a nice rubber type casing. The 676 can control up to 15 devices while the 520 controls 12.

However, I wasn't a big fan of the 676 "sport" look and the peanut shape. The 520 has more of a classy higher end look to it and is cheaper. $98 at Super Wal-Marts vs. $150 - $170 for the 676 in retail stores.

The build quality of the 520 does not seem to be as high as the 600 series. I wouldn't want to drop the 520 on a hard floor. The buttons don't have as firm a feel and some feel sort of "mushy" when pressed. The 520 does not have as many hot buttons as the 600 series but you can certainly customize the top buttons beside the screen. The gray plastic casing will probably scratch easily.

I'm using the 520 to control a Panasonic 42" LCD TV, Dish Network 501 DVR, Phillips DVD player, Panasonc VCR and an old Aiwa tuner. The 520 controls them all with ease. The 520 is also controlling a Netgear MP101 Digital MP3 wireless media player.

For the price I think the 520 is a great buy. I'm going to return my 676 tomorrow and stick with the 520. I don't plan on dropping my 520 or mishandling it so the build quality isn't as high a concern to me. And its not that the quality is not good. It really is. It just doesn't have the rugged feel of the 676. I'm pleased with the 520 and totally satisfied.

Logitech does make another remote sold at Best Buy and Circuit City etc. with model number 659 which has the peanut shape. I would certainly recommend the 520 over the 659 if you have a DVR/Tivo device. The 659 does not have skip ahead buttons. Rather, the 659 is limited to just fast forward and fast rewind.

The Logitech Harmony line of remotes are all simply marvelous. They work well and can control virtually any kind of AV equipment using RF signals. For the price, the 520 is highly recommended. The 676 would be my next recommendation for a moderately priced universal remote but the 520 seems like a better value. Unless you need more hot buttons or a more rugged casing the 520 seems excellent. It's too early to tell whether I'll run into any problems but so far so good.
