Good if you want the basics

Date of Review:  Jun 12, 2006
The Bottom Line: Not a bad unit for the intro user. A bit pricey for the features though. I would consider Garmin for my next purchase.
Review: The unit is very easy to operate. Magellan has definitely improved the details in the manual since their earlier models. This unit is great for the novice user. If you're a hiker, fisherman, or biker this has most of what you need. The internal...

good outdoors gps

Date of Review:  Dec 7, 2004
The Bottom Line: GPS's are unique to each user. This one could be recommended for certain applications(outdoor excursions) and not for others(road trecking).
Review: I received this gps as a gift and ended up taking it back to get a unit with external connections. This gps is a great little piece of equipment if you are using it fot the right applications. The map data will give you a proximity to locations and...

Reliable Entry Unit (with minor interface limitations)

Date of Review:  Nov 26, 2005
The Bottom Line: Overall reliability makes this unit a good choice for entry-level users who aren't looking for roadmap/trail functionality.
Review: This is my third Handheld GPS unit. My first comparison is a General Electric junker that couldn't lock onto a satellite if it was sitting on top of it. The second is the Magellan Sportrak. Of the three, the Magellan Explorist 300 is the best...

Bad tech support or product?

Date of Review:  Oct 30, 2007
Review: I bought this unit maybe a year and half ago, and since then it had numerous problems. The worst is "freeze" state which would happen if device is outside of the map coverage area ( in one particular case I was about 1 mile off the Atlantic shore)...

Keypad loses contact

Date of Review:  Jan 14, 2008
Review: I got this unit about three years ago as a gift. While it worked, I thought it was great. I use it sporadically on trips from Eastern Canada to the USA about twice per year as a basic roadmap. Some of the keys (Zoom In, Nav, maybe others) no longer...

Good Piece of Equipment

Date of Review:  Aug 24, 2005
Review: GPS has come a long way since I used one in the military(12 yrs ago). I read some online reviews and narrowed it down to several Magellans. I felt Magellan had the best perks vs price ratio than Garmin. After narrowing it down I chose the Explorist...

Great value

Date of Review:  Nov 19, 2005
Review: This is my first GPS and I tried out many others before deciding on this. My primary use is hiking and geocaching (see geocaching.com), so street maps were not a major issue for me. It is my opinion that if you are looking for a GPS for street...

Awesome accuracy for the price.

Date of Review:  May 11, 2006
Review: This GPS unit has thrilled me with superb performance from the very start. It quickly acquires and maintains a strong signal even indoors and within a moving vehicle.

The functions are also very accurate (these include an altimeter for...
