One of the best examples of horsebackriding on film
Date of Review: Oct 29, 1999
The year was 1982 and I was a sophomore in high school. A friend took me to see "Man from Snowy River." My life changed. Ok, so I am exaggerating a little, but only to help drive the point home that this little known Australian movie is a gem. This movie has all of the elements of a classic: drama, romance, action, adventure, and one of the best examples of horsebackriding on film. When Jim goes after the brumbies and goes over that cliff... well, I digress.
The film's "big" star name is Kirk Douglas. He plays two roles, as brothers who haven't seen each other in years. Australian actors Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton play starcrossed lovers. She's Kirk Douglas' daughter, Jessica. Kirk is the wealthy land owner, Harrison. Burlinson is Jim, the young mountain boy looking for work. The backdrop for this story is the GORGEOUS Australian outback, set earlier this century. The film is shot beautifully, and the music is breathtaking. (We used a little of it in our wedding.)
But you may be drawn to the horsebacking riding most of all. It is fabulous. There were 2 dozen riders in the movie credits, and all were expert.
Men and women will equally love this movie. It is one you can watch with older children, as younger ones won't get the storyline most likely.
On a cold night when you have a fire roaring and hot chocolate, this is the rental for you.
