Mission :Impossible 2: It's Flipkickerrific!
Date of Review: May 29, 2000
The television show Mission: Impossible aired before my time. Therefore, I cannot try to compare it to the movie. The movie's plot, while not as twisted and involved as it's prequel, is still entertaining. What the plot lacks in depth, John Woo makes up for in action.
As the movie opens, we see Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) free climbing the face of a mountain. He is given his mission in the standard "...If you choose to accept it" form. Hunt is instructed to gather a team, of which one member must be Nyah Hall, a professional thief. John Woo shows just how well he can direct action films. Many beautiful action elements were involved, the most of all being Hunt's aerobatics. During one scene, Ethan Hunt(Cruise)'s opponent is lying on the ground in front of him. Hunt then does a midair flip and performs a legdrop. While horribly unneccesary, this does look very cool. The plot line to this movie was very predictable and unsurprising. This did not drag down the movie much at all. Many filmmakers could learn how to properly make an action film from M:I2. I would like to see Woo doing films more often. I have enough faith in him to have him bring the Bond series out of the craphole it dug itself into with The World is Not Enough. I'm not even going to go there... I was too enveloped in the action sequences to notice any major plot holes, while some other people claimed to have seen them. Direction was superb, action was fantastic. I very much enjoyed this movie. Go see it in the theater while you still can!
