New Native Wrap/ Sling Carrier - didn't love it, didn't hate it!

Date of Review: Jul 15, 2007

The Bottom Line:  This is a good wrap for nursing moms when worn and sized properly.
I purchased this sling carrier when I was pregnant with my second child to replace the Baby Bjorn - which has little use past when baby's size exceeds about 12 lbs. Additionally, I wanted to try a carrier that wasn't so restrictive on the legs, and I was attracted to the longevity of this item – which stated could be used for swaddling/ nursing infants, older baby pouch carry, as well as toddler hip and back carrying.

I followed the instructions online on how to size – in which they instructed the buyer to measure at the bust, however, I guess I didn't take into consideration my bust line being much larger than normal during my pregnancy, as the size that I ordered (medium) was far too large for my frame, as I am on the shorter side (5'4"). I'd have been much better suited with a small, as when the baby did arrive, the fit was not right. (see below description) Since then (this was 3 years ago that I made the purchase!), it appears that the sizing instructions have changed, as they no longer have those specific instructions on the site.

When the baby arrived, I was so excited to use my new sling. I found the directions to be somewhat confusing at first, however, was able to get into a rhythm of putting it on – making sure it was folded correctly, and put on in the right direction. When put on correctly, the material forms a "pouch" that the baby can comfortably snuggle in. A great idea in theory, however, a few things made this idea not so practical for our use, for instance, the size. Since I did not order the correct size, the wrap was way too long. My baby was hanging down near my hips – nursing would have been impossible. I did contact New Native for advisement, and they were very helpful – stating I could alter the sling myself (the instructed me on how/ where) – however, I am not so handy with a sewing machine, so that was not an option. (Ultimately, I ended up giving it to my cousin, who is much taller than me, when she had her first baby).

For a newborn – even with a correct fit – I would have liked to have seen a more "breathable" material – maybe a mesh window – sewn into the area where the baby's head/ face might be. I found that often, my little one's face would be smashed into the material – and while I will admit, she comfortably slept for hours in this thing – I was a tad concerned that she was being smothered at times. These slings are made of 100% cotton – and are almost of a "canvas" weight – and while they feel strong and secure, the material was almost too heavy.

Because this wrap only drapes across one shoulder, extended wear does cause stress/ discomfort on the weight-bearing side – at least it did for me. On the plus side, the wrap is wide, and covers the entire shoulder, as opposed to carriers that have straps that would dig into the shoulder – so the discomfort is minimal when worn correctly.

I did find that when I was sitting, it served as a great nursing cover. It was very easy to transition her into a feeding position and she remained comfortable and snug. Had I chosen a better fit, this would have made for an excellent tool for nursing in public.

Overall, this is not such a bad baby carrier – I have tried worse (and better!). I love that there are no rings or buckles, and that it looks quite natural.
