Product Review

A Classy Read

by   redsox75 ,   May 11, 2000

Pros:  Poetry, cartoons and articles

Cons:  Hard to get through quickly

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Call me a snob, but I love this magazine. I used to read my Dad's when he would get it, but for years I got away from it. Recently at work, I struck up a conversation with someone about it. I took a bunch of back issues that she was going to throw away and I was hooked all over again. I soon subscribed and got a big discount off the cover price.
One reason that I get this magazine is I like to read and write poetry. The New Yorker is one of the few magazines that I know of that publishes poetry. I think most poets would give their best quill pen to be published therein. Many of the poems I think I could top. Many I have cut out to look at again for inspiration.
Another favorite feature is the Goings On About Town. I like looking in the concert announcements. They usually have something in there I would go see if I were in that town. I think it's classy when they list the show and then put "Dining", as a one word sentence. Something about that strikes me as absolutely regal.
As someone else said in their review, the articles reel you in whatever the subject matter. I read an article in a recent issue about these guys that make t-shirts and the obsessive detail in which they seem to revel. Another article describes the life of a car salesman. Another recent article detailed the search for a murderer. Though the crime had occurred almost 30 years ago and the police seemed to know who did it the guy just disappeared.
The cartoons are just fantastic. Such wit I can only aspire to. I know they can be sight gags, and it may be beyond description, but I will try to recreate one for you. Three guys sitting in a bar, among them you see a pair of rabbit ears, just above the level of the bar. The bartender says, holding the phone, "anyone here named Hippity?" I am still laughing about that one.

The only complaint is that I can't finish them fast enough. I am two behind. They arrive every week. I lied. I have another complaint, sometimes they come twice in one week. I got one Monday of this week, then again today. The subscription department is not the best.

If you want to feel cultured (a snobby thing to say I know, but I warned you) get this magazine. Great articles about current events and famous and infamous people. If it came out once every two weeks, I might actually be able to finish them before the next one came.
