Author's Review
This is a product that I'm thrilled about. "High Quality Digital Recording" is inscribed at the bottom of the DS2200's screen, and it accurately describes this product. 5 folders, about 8 hours of recording time, quality audio, and an excellent computer interface has made this unit indispensable to me in my work. For conference calls, I turn on the speakerphone, start the DVR and then download the call to my PC. For trips, I record my car's mileage at various business stops. I record the kids at special events, nightly tucking-ins, and even their soccer games. I record my parents' family stories. All content can be downloaded into separate files on your computer and saved as *.wma files.
Battery life is not great, but is manageable. Two AAA's usually last me 8 or more hours. On occasion, my recordings will suddenly and inexplicably slow down, and then speed up again once I re-record; reminds me of tape recording when battery life got low. Don't know if that's a power anomaly in the DS-2200 or what. That's the only problem I've experienced with my DS-2200.
Downloading is simple. Just put the DS-2200 in its cradle and it automatically launches DSS Player Dictation Module and downloads everything into individual folders. I would prefer to have it download to my data drive rather than to my Windows Documents & Settings folder, but there's no way to do that. The software prompts you to erase the files on the DS-2200 after downloading is completed. You are then given the message that the DS-2200 "may now be safely unplug" [sic].
I did my homework and decided that this was the best bet for me in DVRs. It is expensive, but I think it is getting cheaper as production has apparently shifted to China.
