Being a college student, I'm somewhat of a school supply conesour. After a few semesters, you really figure out what works, and what doesn't.
Thankfully, this pencil works, and rather well!
Tired of super skinny, cheap mechanical pencils, I looked for a better pencil.
I had my criteria. Like many people, I use up the eraser until there's practically nothing left. It gets stuck in the top of the pencil, which of course can ONLY be loaded with lead through that opening that the eraser has lodged itself into. I would dig out the eraser, but then there was nothing to hold the lead in the pencil, so it would fall out in my backpack.
The pencils were cheap, and I got what I payed for. They made my fingers hurt because they're too skinny. The lead was WAY too thick for my liking. The erasers smeared the lead, or worse, ripped my paper. Also, since they were made of cheap plastic, I'd accidently snap them in half when they caught on my backpack and I was trying to get it out.
I got really sick of that, and decided to get myself a nice pencil.
Sitting in a nice display in the college bookstore were these multicolored gems, the Pentel Quicker Clicker Automatic Pencil. There are three lead sizes, and colors that correspond with each. Black, Blue and Pink are the .5 mm. Violet is .7mm, and then they have a .9mm that I cannot remember the color for. All of them were in the same display, but the display has the code chart on it, making it easy to get the right pencil.
I picked one up for the 3 dollars, and went on my merry way. These pencils are awesome.
The eraser is in its own metal holder, inside the top of the pencil. Even if you use up all the eraser, it will not get stuck in there, because the holder has a lip that you pull on. The whole thing pops out of the top of the pencil, and it's all ready to be loaded up with lead.
The clicking mechanism for the lead is on the side of the pencil. I personally find this MUCH more convienant than when it's on the top. It also doesn't make my thumb hurt when I have to repeatedly press the loading mechanism.
The lead size, in case you forget, is engraved on the metal holder. After a year of buying .5mm lead when I had .7mm pencils, and vice versa, it was very nice to be able to KNOW what size I needed, and not have to worry about it.
There is a cap that goes on the top of the pencil, presumably to protect the eraser. Either that, or it's just there for looks.
The pencil has a curved foam grip. It's not huge, or plasticy feeling, and it actually makes holding the pencil much easier on the hands.
All in all, these are THE perfect mechanical pencils. That's probably why just about everyone in my math class was using the same pencil as I was. I would recommend, however, buying a seperate eraser. The ones given are generous in size, but still aren't going to last through tons of erasing.
At 3 dollars, they're a good deal, and I hope I don't lose mine anytime soon!
