Author's Review
I've wanted a standalone divx player for some time but held off buying one until now because some of the reviews I had read stated that people were having problems with some of the early models, such as freezing or stopping during playback, but with any first generation of electronic devices there are usually bugs that need ironing out and the Philips DVP-642 got it right.
I bought my unit at Target for $69.95 which is about the average price going for this model, the unit includes a well written manual,RCA cables and a remote control with batteries, installation is as simple as any other DVD player.
The Philips DVP-642 played everything i threw at it, even divx movies encoded with the Xvid codec and movies recorded on DVD-R and DVD-RW (formats which the player don't officially support) all played fine.
Officially the player supports DVD, VCD, SVCD, DVD+R, DVD+RW,Audio CD's, mp3, DivX 3.11,4.x and 5.x
The only bad thing I can say about this player is that the the remote could have been designed better with the keys not spaced so close together, but at this price I can't complain too much, in fact I'm tempted to buy another one for the family room downstairs.
