Practical magic it was not...
Pros:
There wasn't one single page that was boring.
Cons:
It took a LONG time to pick up a natural flow!
The Bottom Line:
Faint background involving magic..Nice story of two sisters who grew apart then lived with one another in their 40s. Also helped each other out with their families.

Author's Review
I picked this book up because I thought it would be a great October read. I thought it would have something to do with witches and witchcraft. I was wrong..
The book starts off with two main characters who are sisters. Sally and Gillian. They are raised by their two aunts who practice magic. The little girls are feared by the entire neighborhood and their school, so they become outcasts and they only have each other. The aunts are also feared, but sometimes at night, a woman desperate enough for love will come to their door and demand for something to help with their love life. And the aunts always reply "Beware what you wish for.."
The little girls used to hide and watch the women beg their aunts and they made a vow never to become like one of them. Never to be ruled by love.
As the girls get older, they try and become like everyone else. Sally becomes the quiet one who likes to stay inside, cook healthy meals and read. She rarely dates. Whereas Gillian dates all the men in town and finally decides to marry and run away.
Sally then moves out eventually to New York, so her family can get away from all the ridicule. And one night Gillian comes unexpectedly with a huge problem. A problem that brings the entire family together and reunites them.
One of the reasons I only give this three stars is because there is very little character development. First the girls are young and you start to get a feel for them, and suddenly they're teenagers who are different from the girls they once were, and then they are adults who you feel sorry for because of the way their lives turned out. And the book took a very long time to get started. It felt like you had just started the book even 100 pages into it. It never really delved into the girls thoughts. :( Just named their characteristics and facts that are important to the story.
I did keep reading the book though because it was written nicely. A quick read, I would say. Not much food for thought or nothing you would want to read again and again. Just something nice, which is needed every once in a while.
