Product Review

DEFINITELY A LOSER

by   dutchy ,   Nov 16, 2003

Pros:  can't think of any

Cons:  clasp is uncomfortable for mother, drawstrings are uncomfortable for baby. Not adjustable while wearing.

The Bottom Line:  This bag is inferior in terms of comfort and versatility. Poorly adjustable. Not suitable for babies to lie in cradlehold.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

Baby seemed folded double in the bag after it took two of us just to get him in -- He cried bloody murder until we took him out! Several tries to help him lie comfortably were failed ones. He hated it.

The bag is not well fitting for smaller adults (I am rather average sized at 5,4 and 140lbs, but I had it tightened to the max and still my baby hung a bit too low for my comfort.

The buckle clasp felt uncomfortable against my back. When you wear it correctly, the adjustable draw-strap rests on your back facing down, so it is impossible to adjust it yourself once you're wearing it. Once the baby is in, there is so much friction in the clasp that it is very difficult to adjust, even with help. Clasp opens the sling like a belt, but you can't reach it because it's at the back. Seems to have no real function.

Worst of all, the drawstrings on the sides dig into fragile baby's skin causing red stripes. If you loosen them completely, releasing the tension, then the bag is made unsafe. The only solution to this is to have your baby buried so deep in the bag that I feared suffocation. My baby didn't like to be there anyway, seemed closterphobic and probably too stuffy.

We were only able to use this bag once our baby reached a stabile sitting age (around 10 months)with him sitting on our hips. Then it was useful.
I used it mostly for grocery shopping, as a "guard-rail" around the childseating section of the shoppingcart, when his sit-balance was still developing to keep him safely in the cart, and to support him on my hip when he wanted to be held/carried.

I've heard some say they span it across the playpen and let baby snooze in it like a hammock. We did not have success with this manoeuvre.

We also bought the Baby Bjorn and our son loved that. The biggest advantage was the visibility for both of us. I could snuggle his little head with my chin. He loved best facing mom (or dad) for intimacy. It met all the needs of a sling except lack of cradlehold and ease of breastfeeding.
It fit him past his first birthday! (although by then we were also using a backpack, but I continued to use it to carry him to sleep).

Now I am pregnant with our second and I am shopping for a new sling for the first stage and for easy breastfeeding (to supplement use with the baby bjorn).
Ive heard and read great things about both the Over The Shoulder Baby Holder and the New Native Baby Carrier.

The Premaxx was in my opinion a waste of money.
