Table Scraps

A poignant movie about a man trapped by circumstances of his upbringing and subsequent personality makeup. Set against the background of WWII, two fine performances by Hopkins and Thompson. One climactic scene between the two hints at possibilities and is a quietly intense and memorable scene, one of the defining of the movie along with scenes showing Hopkins in the midst of his father's illness.

The movie just lets it play for the most part, without judgement imposed on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the war, or even on the life Hopkins ends up living.
A well done film with the trait of other fine films, full character development (Hopkins). The viewer comes to understand him, and what he has transformed into over a lifetime. One takes away a reminder of how precious and special life is, and some of the choices people make that dictate the life experience.
