This is a secure digital (SD) card reader that fits into any usb slot. The device allows you to operate any SD card as if it were a flash drive. It is very useful for transferring files from peripherals to computers without installing anything.
Use
or the idiots guide to plug and play
This device came sealed in a plastic card so that it can be hung from a rack. The first thing I did was cut it open with scissors. I found that I had cut up the installation mini cd and the instructions! Since I clearly could not return it like this, I went ahead and plugged it into my computer.
There is a tiny round window on the top that lights up when it is connected to the computer. My Windows XP computer immediately recognized it as a storage device and assigned it a drive letter. You can easily drag and drop files in and out. I have only used this device on XP computers. I have never tried it on a MAC, or any other kind of Linux OS. I have a feeling that that mini cd might have contained some information about using the device with older operating systems.
My Real World Application
My Canon camera and my Palm T|X use SD cards.
Epinions is actually responsible for a lot my use of this device. I can sit in and easy chair in front of the TV and type reviews on my Palm keyboard. There is a program on palm called Docs to Go that can sync documents to my PC, but I have let the free trial run out.
I have also used this to transfer images that I carry around on my palm and transfer the pictures to other computers. It has also helped me get pictures from my phone (phone to Palm via Bluetooth to computer via Card Reader).
Care
None. Zippo. I keep this in my messenger bag. It rolls around the bottom with the change, pens, keys and some dirt. (I have no idea how I get dirt in my messenger bag, but I am always having to clean it out). I dropped on the ground numerous times. I cannot remember ever getting it wet, and I believe that it is not waterproof. It did not come with any kind of case, and I dont use one. Sometimes I leave the SD card stuck in it, but often times not. The reader has continued to perform well. The gray plastic has some scratches, but that's it.
