The Bottom Line: Don't buy this unit. Find other units, like the Panasonic, which are rated well in epinions.
Just wanted to update after months of use. This recorder starts up, reading discs, quicker than my Panasonic. I believe I have discovered that the reason I sometimes cannot view discs from this recorder on my Panasonic is actually due to the Panasonic. The discs read fine in normal read-only players. I still prefer the Panasonic but have discovered it is not as bad as I originally thought.
This was my first home DVD recording unit.
I agree with others that directions are more difficult than average. Even worse, in my opinion, is the fact that getting in touch with Samsung is next to impossible!
The unit is extremely noisy to start with. It can drown out quiet moments or low speech in any movie, and we have a surround sound system. I moved it into another room used mainly for recording and not disturbing.
DVD's recorded in it are sometimes not viewable in my Panasonic unit. My Panasonic lets me finish DVD's so they will be easily viewed in other units. Unfortunately, I bought and paid full price for the Samsung before I bought the Panasonic. I so wish I had purchased Panasonic in the first place.
A disc cannot be "finalized" or set so viewable from all other recorders, if a DVD+RW is used. The book indicates that this option will pop up with other discs but I sure haven't seen it. So far though, we can view the DVD's in play-only DVD players.
Old home VHS tapes copied to DVD are easy to do and the quality is okay. Better quality but longer time needed on my computer.
I haven't used the front panel inputs but they are available.
If I were buying a new unit today, I would also look for one that will record on something higher than 4x. I don't know if that is possible but I buy DVD's in bulk at a warehouse and have trouble finding RW or R discs at speeds of 4x or less.
