The Season That Broke All the Rules

Date of Review: Jun 24, 2003

The Bottom Line:  Pass the popcorn so I can feed my addiction.
About the Show:

Sex and the City follows 4 single thirty-something girls while they live, work, play and of course love in New York City. The show focuses mainly on Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) a writer and her three friends Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. Samantha is the one who isn t necessarily oversexed, she has a healthy sexual appetite and shuns monogamous relationships. Charlotte, the art dealer, is the eternal optimist about love, Miranda is her complete opposite; she is acerbic, a pessimist and an attorney.

According to most fans and critics Season 4 is the one where all the rules were broken. Samantha entered into a serious and monogamous relationship with hotel bigwig Richard Wright. Just as sexual ambitious as Samantha he kept Samantha on her toes until cheating on her in the last episode. Charlotte s marriage to Trey MacDougal begins to deteriorate once she realizes she may never have children. Carrie gets back together with Aidan, gets engaged then calls it off once she realizes that Aidan may never trust her for her indiscretions with Big. Miranda sleeps with Steve to make him feel better about his one remaining testicle and winds up pregnant.

This season that premiered on June 22 will be the last for Sex and the City. The show is on Sundays, on HBO at 9:00.

The Episodes:

Charlotte and Trey have exciting sex around the city but Charlotte wonders where their relationship is heading. 52. What's Sex Got To Do With It?
Carrie tries to have a relationship with Ray the musician but he has other ideas. Charlotte wants sex and a relationship with Trey who has yet to ask her to move back into the apartment. Samantha breaks up with Maria, because she feels their relationship has become tedious. Charlotte attempts to redecorate her and trey s apartment but Treys mother Bunny has other ideas.

54. Baby, Talk Is Cheap
This episode was my absolute favorite of the season. So much was packed into this one. First Carrie realizes that she misses Aidan dearly and emails him simply stating I miss you. She doesn t hear from him and finally calls him at his furniture shop. She suggests a date with Steve and Miranda and during the date Carrie expresses her desire to get back together with him. Aidan tells her no but Carrie decides to go to his house and plead her case. Aidan screams at her that she broke his heart and Carrie runs off back to her apartment. Aidan follows her and they make love. Carrie wakes to find herself by herself and none of her questions about Aidan Answered.

Miranda sleeps with a marathon trainer who performs tungus lingus but she finds that she cannot reciprocate the favor. Samantha tells a man that baby talk during sex is not ok and in return he storms out of her apartment. Trey and Charlotte decide that having one kid would be worth and get down to work.

Aidan returns to Carrie and she makes a final plea for the two of them to get back together. He answers, Ok lets give it a shot.

55. Time and Punishment
While Carrie and Aidan are making love, Big calls leave Aidan angry and distant. Carries tries to be the perfect girlfriend but to no avail. She realizes that Aidan hasn t forgiven her for her affair with Big and when Aidan flirts with a female bartender, Carrie makes a scene. Carrie tells Aidan repeatedly that he has to forgive her and Aidan releases his anger

56. My Motherboard, My Self
Carries has trouble letting Aidan into her life when several catastrophes arise such as her motherboard crashing and Miranda s mother passing away. Samantha s reaction to the death is different than Carries but it leaves her just as shaken.

57. Sex and the Country
Miranda finds out that Steve has testicular caner and screams at him for not taking it seriously. Carrie goes to Aidan s country house only to find out that she isn t exactly a country girl. Charlotte goes to Bunny Connecticut house and flirts with the gardener.

58. Belles of the Balls
Carrie and Aidan spend a weekend in the country and all is nice when Big shows up mourning over a lost relationship with an actress. Miranda feels sorry for Steve who only has one testicle, and sleeps with him to try to bring up his spirits.

59. Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda
Miranda learns she s pregnant and breaks the news at the same time that Charlotte realizes that she may never get pregnant. While Miranda contemplates a abortion Carrie thinks back to her own personal decision and lies to Aidan when he asks. Meanwhile Samantha gains a famous client, and then loses just as fast when her desire for a Hermes Birkin bag gets the best of her.

60. Just Say Yes

Miranda reveals to Steve that she is having his baby and Carrie finds a ring that Aidan hasn t given to her yet. Carrie finds out her apartment building is going co-op and Aidan offers to buy her place and the apartment next door so the two of them can live there. Trey expresses to Charlotte that he doesn t want to try to have a baby anymore and charlotte is heartbroken. Aidan finally proposes to Carrie with a different ring and Carrie accepts.

61. The Good Fight

Aidan and Carrie cramped living quarters cause their first big blowout and Carrie wonders if she has to put her single self on a shelf. Carrie tells Aidan that when she gets home she needs peace and quiet and Aidan obliges. A minute late Carrie realizes that once her needs are met she doesn t need them anymore. Richard Wright tries to get romantic with Samantha who insists they are just having sex.

62. All That Glitters
Carrie would rather go out dancing with the girls than to stay home with Aidan so she and the girls go out dancing at a gay bar. Carrie meets a gay shoe buyer and the two hit it off, but when they spend more time together Carrie realizes she rather be home with Aidan.

Trey moves out of their apartment but returns to have a Home and Garden shoot with Charlotte. Charlotte decides she is tired of fighting for their marriage.

63. Change of a Dress
Carrie just isn t feeling the marriage vibe and feels pressured by everyone to get married. At a charity fundraiser Samantha realizes that Richard has been seeing another woman. To try to get him jealous Samantha sleeps with a gossip columnist but Richard just laughs and says that they should keep things the same.

Aidan and Carrie dress up to go to the fundraiser and Aidan pressures Carrie to run off to Las Vegas and get married. Carrie realizes that he still doesn t trust her and the two break up.

64. Ring a Ding Ding
Instead of a love letter, Aidan leaves Carrie a letter from an attorney saying she has 30 days to vacate or she can buy her apartment form him. Carrie finds out that she is an undesirable candidate for a loan. She turns to Big who offers her the money for the down payment. The girls veto this and Carrie begins looking for a new apartment. My Thoughts
Michael Patrick King provides the director commentary and boy is it boring. During this you cannot hear the dialogue and I could only stand to listen to him drone on for two episodes. On the bright side he does offer little tips and hints behind the scenes of production.

The Special features are nothing to cheer about they are mostly Cast Bios and various commentaries. I wish they would add a blooper real or behind the scenes access because it would make the DVD set much more interesting. There are a total of 18 episodes on 3 DVD disks.
