Author's Review
I rented this movie after seeing one of Shakira's videos on Cable. I have to admit that what first impressed me about this singer was not her music but her gorgeous looks. I don't recall the name of the song, but it had a nice pop sound, and featured Shakira covered in some sort of black oil. I rented this live concert of Shakira from Netflix, and she didn't disappoint in the sexiness factor. She shimmies and shakes throughout the whole performance, and looks great.
However, I was also very pleased to see that Shakira is not just another pop singer selling albums on the basis of her sex appeal. Her music is very powerful, and it is clear that Shakira is calling the musical shots, and she is not just the creation of some slick music producers selling pop records. Nope, Shakira is the real deal.
Concert Performance Shakira can SING! Unlike many pop singers from Madonna to Britney, this woman has a voice to be reckoned with. While the aforementioned singers rely on many studio enhancements and sound suspect in concert, Shakira's voice booms from the center of the stage and commands your attention as much as her beauty.
Ojos Asi The concert opens with rocking guitars behind a giant curtain adorned with a mongoose and a cobra. Shakira is shown backstage getting ready to go out. As the curtain opens, a middle eastern style violin solo plays, reminiscent of a snake charmer's music. Amidsts a cloud of smoke and cheering fans, Sharkira appears center stage beneath a giant cobra in a sensual outfit of black leather pants and a black tassled bikini top. She shimmers and shakes like an exotic belly dancer and commands the attention of everyone. She then sings in Spanish, and she sounds great. Shakira has a real voice, not one of recording studios.
Si Te Vas, I can't understand the words, but I loved this song. It made me wish I had paid more attention in my college Spanish class.
Ciega Sordomuda Another Spanish song I didn't understand, but it sounded good.
The One Ah, English, I know that language! The audience held up a sea of lighters for this song, a slow moving ballad. Shakira proves she can belt out a ballad as well as a rocker.
Back in Black Brian Johnson would even approve of this cover tune. The familiar AC/DC chords start on a very gentle sound, as Shakira sings the opening lyrics, but soon, the guitars rock out and Shakira gives her own special rockin interpretation of AC/DCs classic tune. She delivers this song in a form fitting pair of plaid pants and a cut off T-Shirt. She looks way better than Angus Young does in his Australian school boy outfit! The camera pans in and focuses on Shakira as she dances around to the guitar solos.
Rules Shakira takes to the drums for this song, and is actually a pretty decent drummer! This rocking song reminded me of early Pat Benatar. (You know, if Pat Benatar had a South American accent)
Inevitable For this song, Shakira shows that she can also play the guitar, and accompanies herself singing with an acoustic guitar.
Estoy Aqui Alright, I remember some Spanish, and I do believe that this means We are here now!. Shakira performs the "robot" as the songs instrumentals open the song.
Underneath Your Clothes Another slow song with the audience singing and swaying back and forth on with the lighters. Shakira sings sensually into the microphone for this slow ballad.
Octavo Dia This song opens with a quote from Jimi Hendrix. when the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace. The band appears in odd masks. Again, my lack of Spanish skills prevented me from understanding, but not from enjoying this song.
Ready for the Good Times Another costume change finds Shakira in a red pair of leather pants with a sleeveless red shirt shaking against a backdrop of neon images to a song I was familiar with.
Also performed are Tu, Poem to a Horse and Objection The show closes with Shakira's hit Whenever, Wherever. She wore what appeared to be a chandalier on her head for this number when she first came out. Wherever, whenever, we were meant to be together Yup, in my dreams anyway.
DVD Music Quality The concert was captured very well in full surround sound. All channels are driven in the Dolby Digital mix, with the front left, center and front right speaker filling your room with the music from the stage, and the rear channels used for echo and ambience to give the feel of being in a live venue. The concert was recorded with full range too, so low bass and Shakira's high notes are all captured equally well. If you have a subwoofer, Shakira will shake your house!
DVD Video Quality I was glad that the video quality here was very good, as I stated above, Shakira is a stunningly beautiful woman, so seeing her in concert is much better than just listening. It is DVD quality for certain, and the lighting of the show was very good, so the cameras are able to capture the show very well. The show is filmed in Widescreen, so I was a bit disappointed in the fact that the DVD is not anamorphic. It's shot in 4:3 letterbox format, so to fill a widescreen TV, you have to enlarge the image, which of course, reduces image quality. I really would have liked the DVD to be in true widescreen. Nevertheless, the quality was quite good, so even blowing the image up to fill a Widescreen TV, it still has the crispness and sharpness of high quality DVD image.
Subtitles It was not until I had watched this movie, written my notes for this review, and returned it, that I discovered that the disc did in fact include English subtitles! Good to know, as this is a disc I would buy, if I saw it on sale.
Summary Shakira drew me in with her good looks, but kept me listening with her great voice, and incredible performance. She is definitely not just another pretty singer, Shakira is the real deal, and I was very glad I rented this DVD.
