The Sony RMV310 Universal remote control can control up to seven devices. The remote is lightweight and easy to use with it's large buttons and easy to see labels. The case is made of two pieces of plastic: silver and black with blue, green, black and white buttons. The remote has an incredible operating range of at least 24'. I can point at the TV from anywhere in my large living room and change the channel or operate the DVD player.
Batteries
The battery compartment lid slides firmly into place and is surprisingly fall resistant. My remote slides of the leather couch often because of frolicking felines. Yet after over a dozen falls, the Sony RMV310 has survived every fall. I use
Energizer NiMh Batteries and the
Energizer CHM4AAWB NiMH Battery Charger to keep the remote fully charged. The remote, after six months of use, has only required one recharge.
Programming and Support
Sony has provided a very detailed product manual with the remote. The first manual is a five page foldout that features your operating instructions. The second manual is a four page foldout of the component code numbers. You should expect 15 minutes to reprogram the remote for your TV. If you run into problems visit the link provided at the bottom of the review. My major gripe about this remote is the lack of support for my Bose 3-2-1 Series 2 system. I tried several codes and none of them worked. The product website makes no mention of the system either. They do have a warning stating:
In some rare cases, you may not be able to operate your non-Sony equipment with the supplied remote control. This is because your equipment may use a code that is not provided with this remote control. In this case, please use the equipment's own remote control.
Keep this in mind and consult the component code number manual online before purchasing this remote for yourself or as a gift.

Summary
My life is too complicated to have fancy remote controls lying all over the house. The Sony RMV310 Universal remote is a well designed, drop resistant, easy to use remote that makes life a little easier. However a lack of support for my Bose 3-2-1 Series 2 system should make you wonder if it will support all your devices as well. Also the 90 day replacement only warranty leaves a lot to be desired. Yet, overall the remote was a gift so I am not complaining in the slightest!
