When our internal burner died on our Dell, we were looking for a new external burner that we could use on both a PC and a Mac. Since we needed something quickly, we didn't do a huge amount of research before purchasing the Sony DRX840U External DVD Recorder.
This burner connects to the computer via a USB port, and has done a great job burning both DVDs and CDs. We have not have any issues, and we burn on average 25-50 DVDs a month (family home movies that we distribute, as well as music archives). It's been very easy to switch between the PC and the Mac.
I do want to note that we already owned the full Nero package, so I never used any of the software that came with the burner.
The only negative aspect of this burner is that since the unit stands up, every once in awhile a dvd or cd will fall out when it is being loaded into the burner. We have just made a habit of keeping a finger lightly on the cd or dvd until the drawer begins to close.
We've had this burner for over a year now, and I am very satisfied. I would recommend this burner to anyone who needs and external DVD burner, and especially to those who own both a PC and a Mac. It's affordable, very easy to use, and gets the job done!
