Product Review

Possibly the best solution.....BUT READ ON !

by   tophighfi ,   Dec 2, 2006

Pros:  Great design & build to last. Excellent picture & Sound.

Cons:  More color choices would be nice. Not all picture displayed. Read on.

The Bottom Line:  After reading reviews about experiences with other manufacturers units, I think this is the best choice so far.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

This is a great solution for those who are looking for a viable solution to providing multiple media solutions in a Kitchen or even a Bath in one complete package.

I guess the best place to get started is acquainting you what you see when you first open the packaging.
You'll see the usual shock absorbing material protecting the under-counter unit, a small bag of hardware, a template and a single two-sided sheet that contains both the mounting/installation & operating instructions both of which I would advise Sony to review and rewrite.

When choosing a location, keep in mind that along with controls on the front of the unit, there is also 3 buttons, which are not often used, on the right-side.
To simplify your installation, the unit is expected to be mounted under a hanging cabinet. There is a template provided and will be placed on the lowest cabinet section INSIDE the cabinet so that FOUR 9/32-inch(6.5mm) holes can be drilled for mounting the unit. Also provided are ADJUSTABLE SPACERS so that the unit, when mounted from below, will clear the lower edge of the cabinet.

Something else to keep in mind, if any of your cables, (i.e. power, antenna, A/V source-L/R/Video) are going to be routed up thru the bottom of the cabinet, this would be a good time to also provide holes for them to pass. By the same token, if your cables are going thru the wall directly behind the unit. I would make them now.
Another point, if your cabinet is short in depth or you want the unit to sit as close to the rear wall as possible, acquiring some right-angle adapters from Radioshack will help, as the connections in the rear of the unit provided come directly straight out.

Yes, I did mention ANTENNA connection (75-ohm F-connector) as there is no internal TV antenna provided, so the unit will need to be connected to an external antenna or a CATV source.

After all the above is resolved, I would strongly suggest to connect all cables BEFORE you secure the unit to the bottom of the cabinet.

The ICF-CD555TV provides a Clock(time-of-day) that doubles as a Cooking (countdown) Timer, a TV via a 7-inch positionable wide-screen LCD, a CD player that can play prerecorded CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs & some MP3s, an AM/FM Stereo Radio and the ability to accept an external A/V Source (L/R/Video).

The Cooking Timer will sound irregardless to any other media being on by sounding a "buzzer" sound.

The AM/FM Stereo Radio sounds quite well and has the capability for program material to be optionally selected to be played in Mono. Tuning can be manually or 5-AM, 10-FM pre-sets can be programmed via the separate LCD Digital Display on the front of the unit. 5 pre-set buttons at-a-time are always accessible.

The CD player can handle standard and 3" sized discs. Every command possible is available from Start, Stop, Fast-Forward, Skip-Next-Track to access directly to a specific track. Selectable modes of playback range from Repeating a single track to Shuffle (or random play).

The TV section is quite amazing for a small compact unit. The picture quality is second to none. If you have the screen tucked away, it takes nothing more than a light pressure on the Display-Release button to allow the screen to be tilted down and allow you to position it in any preferred direction.
It has a full complement of settings i.e. Picture, Brightness, Color, Hue, Cable/Over-the-Air, Auto Program, Manual Channel Skip/Add & MTS.
It can tune VHF/UHF or Cable stations.

All commands can be controlled from the front of the unit or the fully functionable Remote Control.
Both the unit & remote provide Volume-Up/Down, Mute, Display(which provides channel #), selection of source, Screen-Mode(Normal, Full, Zoom & Wide) and more.

The Stereo 1.8 watt 3" Speakers provide excellent sound for all media.

There are also selectable SOUND environments i.e. Mega-Bass, Mega-Xpand and Mega-Bass + Mega-Xpand.

The built-in magnet on the Remote Control was a smart innovation and provides a way to place it on the refrigerator when it's not needed.

Added 2/7/2007....
Have noticed that not quite all TV picture area is being displayed, and this is true for 2 units we own.
About 1/8" of the very TOP & BOTTOM of the program material is off the screen thus indicating an adjustment of vertical-size is necessary.
You cannot see items such as news-banner-information and sometimes channel ID(which isn't so bad) from being displayed.
If there was, say a news banner, it was not viewable.
School closings ticker, forget it.
According to the official Sony Service Manual($15), which has been obtained, this adjustment is possible from the service-test-mode.
The only problem is that the procedure in the manual will not engage the unit(s) into this service-test-mode.
It just does NOT respond.
After numerous calls to Sony about this issue of trying to get the unit(s) into test-mode, they have NO ANSWER to provide other than pay the price to send it to one of their authorized service centers for repair.
Even under warranty, you have to pay the cost (about $20-25) for one-way insured shipping to them.

UPDATE 3/27/2007.....
In regards to image missing from top & bottom of screen...
I sent the new one (under warranty) off to Sony and it came back the same way it went out.
My inquiry to them was answered "there was nothing wrong with it".
1/8" on a 13" screen is o.k. BUT on a 7" screen, you miss alot.
Outside of that, the unit performs admirably.
There are spatial settings for the stereo speakers that make anything produced by the unit sound quite good, if not excellant.
