MDR-XD100 - A decent low-end product

Sony MDR-XD100s are a very nice choice of headphones if you're not willing to fork out hundreds for a high-end pair. I found my pair at Dick Smith Electronics for $50 (Australian).

The sound is great for the average music enthusiast (I'm no audiophile so I can't give too much detail here), plenty of bass when you need it (only a bit of rattling with very deep bass at higher volumes, awesome for listening to Kyuss... The intro to Molten Universe alone is worth the price). The higher frequencies seem fine to me too.

The units themselves are bloody big when they're on your head, so you might look like a bit of a dingus wearing them about. Fortunately, they are fairly light for their size. Out of the packaging, they are far from comfortable - the padding is not thick enough and your ears press against the inside, and starts to ache really quickly (for me at least). Tucking some rolled up tissues underneath the padding turns them into some very comfy cans, though. I don't know if this affects sound quality, but if it does, I can't tell. The cord is long enough to walk around a room with, but not to the point of being a hinderance. It certainly is flexible too, and doesn't seem to tangle as much as some of my previous pairs. It doesn't seem to be as loud as some other headphones either, but unless you like to blast your music to insane levels, shouldn't be a problem.

Overall, these aren't the worst headphones in the world. With a bit of tweaking, they're great for everyday indoor use. If you're on a low budget, get them. As long as you're not seen in public with them, you'll be fine :D
