Product Review

Unreliable computer. Junk software. Poor support.

by   youngkreisler ,   Jun 21, 2007

Pros:  Computer has pretty good screen - about the only positive aspect.

Cons:  Construction feels flimsy. Software is very unreliable. Poor performance. Poor product support.

The Bottom Line:  This is a machine that tests your patience and sucks away your time. It's best to avoid it.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

This is among the worst painful computer experience I've had. When I bought the computer, it took me 3-4 hours just to remove all the junk trial software. Since then, the wireless network adapter works intermittently. After contact Sony Level 2 support, I learned this is a common problem. It's difficult for me to isolate whether this problem is caused by Sony's driver or Vista, but both Sony and Microsoft are apparently quite certain it's the other guy's problem.

Vista is a real junk OS. It seems to retain all the problems from XP and introduces plentiful of new annoyances. This computer has a 1.6 GHz dual-core processor, which I understand has the same architecture as the Core Duo but less cache memory. It runs pretty slow with Vista Home Premium. The shutdown-reboot cycle takes over 6 minutes!

What I find particularly distasteful is that in order to save a few dimes, Sony does not ship a Vista CD with the computer, so you have to make your own "restore" disks. The major problems is that if there is any software problem, their technical support wants you to do a full restore that wipes you hard drive and gets you back to the factory setting!

My advice is to stay away from this product. Save your time and sanity and switch to Apple computers. Or at least stick with XP. If you decide to try any machine with Vista installed, make sure you have a return policy with no restocking fee.
