Good Standalone Movie

SW1 is definitely the best visual movie to date (with a close second from The Matrix). The effects are second to none, and an entire sitting could be taken up just looking for all the special effects. Visually speaking, George Lucas definitely outdid himself.

Plotwise, it isn't too shabby either. Though a bit complex. We get to learn about the beginnings of the Empire, how the emperor rose to power, and, of course, about Annakin.

But an original Star Wars movie, it isn't. There really wasn't any interaction between the characters that we've grown to love about about the originals...no petty squabbles between Han Solo and Princess Leia. This isn't to say the characters aren't interesting...far from it. But there seemed to be more emphasis on the visuals and rather complicated plotline, than actual character development.

As a standalone movie, this is a definite thumbs up. As a Star Wars movie, one might be disappointed, but would still be enjoyable.

However...Jar Jar MUST go!
