State and Main a funny, yet unusual movie

Date of Review:  Jan 17, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you liked Fargo, I'd say go see it. Its funny, its interesting, and better than most of the other movies out there.
Review: I saw State and Main on the opening night because a) I wanted to take my girlfriend to a movie, and b) being from Vermont I was curious to see how they depicted it. Don't believe everything they say about Vermont though, we aren't quite that nice...

A movie that lets you read between the lines

Date of Review:  Jan 18, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you like intelligent humor, see it. If you like to read, see it. If you're expecting a normal formula flick, you'll either be disappointed or pleasantly surprised.
Review: This is probably one of those movies where you either love it or hate it - or, to be more correct, you either get it or you don't get it. Everyone I've gone with has liked it, but at one viewing a young guy in the audience walked out - so this may...

His Own Competition

Date of Review:  Dec 8, 2000
Review: David Mamet may be the foremost social critic of our times. Whether laying contemporary sexual mores bare in OLEANNA or the ruins of the American Dream in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, Mamet's view of modern life is often brutally honest, hitting closer to...

A major misfire from the usually reliable Mamet.

Date of Review:  Dec 21, 2000
Review: Pure, unadulterated horror. That is all I can really say in the face of this colossal blunder from writer/director David Mamet. In fact, I'm not even sure that I have words at my disposal to describe how utterly embarrassed I was during every waking...

It Doesn't Have to be about a Mill!

Date of Review:  Dec 22, 2000
Review:
Prolific writer David Mamet has written some 30 screenplays during the past 20 years, many of them serious pieces about life's losers and con men, though Wag the Dog certainly contained a great deal of sarcastic humor. The lighthearted State...

Sheer Hilarity

Date of Review:  Dec 24, 2000
Review: One of the key rules in Hollywood is "Don't make films about Hollywood." The thought is that no matter how funny the script may read to the crew, middle-America just won't get it. Yet filmmakers throughout the years have continually broken this rule...

Hollywood: New England Style

Date of Review:  Apr 9, 2001
The Bottom Line: Go see this movie. It is very good to watch.
Review: Well, Hollywood potraying itself in another film. This film has a film crew doing a film in a quaint New England village after being banned in New Hampshire because of a scandal involving major star Bob Barrenger(Alec Baldwin) and a teenage girl(Oh...

Am I missing something, or is this Doc Hollywood 2?

Date of Review:  Jan 18, 2001
The Bottom Line: I think many people will like this movie, but if you're like me, it'll feel flat & pretty boring.
Review: I know I?m gonna get crucified for this, but so be it: "State and Main", while being a somewhat decently entertaining movie, is nothing more than an updated version of "Doc Hollywood". You remember the plot of that one, right? Big city surgeon...

The best movie movie in years

Date of Review:  Jan 22, 2001
The Bottom Line: Go see it. It's funny, it has great writing and great acting.
Review: One expects good writing from David Mamet. "State and Main" does not disappoint. One does not normally expect comedy from Mamet, however. "Oleanna," "A Few Good Men," "The Verdict," and the like all feature good writing but generally heavy, dramatic...

do not waste your time with this

Date of Review:  Feb 22, 2001
The Bottom Line: Do not waste your 4-8 dollars to go see or rent this movie because you will be greatly disappointed.
Review: This is probably one of the worst movies i have ever seen it is horribly boring with a sluggish story line. There is only 1 funny scene with alec baldwin and a teenager. Since he plays an actor with a 'hobby' of teenagers. The movie takes place with...
